Winter Training 2017-2018

Over this winter I have done a lot of training in many different places not just the UK. In I have had various UKJS squad camps and I did a Techno Plus training camp in Hayling Island which was very cold and windy. In December I did a few days of RSX coaching with Ali Masters and this would be the last of my RSX training until the national ranker in March. The UKJS squad camp in February was too windy to sail techno on the second and third day so we went short boarding instead which was really fun and tightened up some footwork when carve gybing.

Training abroad I went to Mondello which was a lot warmer than home and I was training with Jimmy Van Someren and his coach Casper Bouman. Despite the transporting of board and sail to and from Mondello it was very fun and useful training camp. It was my Mum who took me there and we stayed in an hotel 5 minutes walk from the sailing club where we sailed from each day. Our limited Italian made it quite difficult to communicate but despite this we managed to explore and find restaurants that we liked or didn’t like. The wind was very light until the last two days where it was very windy in the place that we launched but lighter further out. The sun would always come out at around 1:30 which was nice. For lunch each day we would walk 2 minutes to a near by restaurant that did cheap but tasty food.Overall I learnt a lot and enjoyed my time in Mondello.

Another destination I trained in was Marseille but this was a little different as I was driven by (coach) Ali Masters and fly home by myself, also there is a 3 day competition at the end of the training camp that I will attend. In the lead up to the competition I was be training on techno plus with Jimmy Van Someren and his coach Casper Bouman but for the competition I sailed on 7.8 as there was more people in that fleet. The training had mixed conditions where I tried to learn as much as I could, In the racing it was lighter and after some close and tough racing I managed to come second. I was very pleased with this performance. Big thanks to Ali Masters for taking me there and the coaching. I also learnt important and useful skills I will need in the future on and off the water.

I will soon be heading off to Mondello again for the techno plus European championships.
